Are you thinking of adding a four-legged furry member in your family? Well, if that is the case then we must tell you that Golden Retriever is an ideal dog breed for adoption. Also because of their friendly nature, it becomes easier for you to interact and train them. Though, they are very friendly, this could be reason enough to make dog walking a task for you. Not to mention, their friendly behaviour with other dogs or people can also build a habit of leash-pulling in them. If you are not careful about it, then it might lead to severe injuries.
Therefore, if you want your dog to walk properly without creating a fuss or pulling on the leash, then you need to start training him when he’s a pup. Just like an infant, even dogs need proper lessons to help them know the dos and don’ts, especially while walking with a leash on. Dogs have different habits like some might just run around when taken out for a walk while others will simply go sniffing places. So, it is important to teach him things which should be avoided during a walk. Listed below are some tips which help you train your Golden Retriever from hauling on the leash. Younger Is Easier It is easier to teach a small kid, as their mind is not set in any direction. The same goes for a puppy as well. You must start leash training your Golden Retriever at a young age of around 4 to 5 weeks. The sooner you will start to instil good habits the more he will adapt to its nature. You must make them understand that the collar and leash are for their own safety and will not harm them in any manner. Attention Practice Golden Retrievers are like toddlers with no focus on a single object. Multiple things might grab their attention all at once giving them several reasons to pull on their leash. Say for example, they’d want to explore places by sniffing around the bush, run after other dogs, licking a kid, and much more. This nature will result in you running around the park or road in different directions. So, it’s your responsibility to stop this behaviour and concentrate on the walk. You can start by keeping their attention on you when you call their name, maintain a constant eye contact, etc. Walking By Your Side The main objective of all this training is that to make your Golden Retriever walk by your side without hauling on the leash. When your dog gets used to the leash, then he will start to pull you around in different directions. You need to stop this as soon as it begins by remaining still at a place and letting him cool down on his own. Once he is quiet is when you can resume your walking. Don’t pet or reward him, as he may misunderstand pulling of leash as a good behaviour and try it again. Don’t restrain him; let him explore his surroundings but keep an eye on him. These simple, yet useful tricks can help your Retriever to settle easily without getting in any kind of trouble.
